George McKinney, Marriage in America:
I've been doing some research on various aspects of marriage - primarily legal and immigration issues rather than marriage customs. The changes from the prerevolutionary period through the 19th Century up to the 1930s are quite fascinating and bring a lot of insight into the world of women in our country.

Simpson, the first to use chloroform in childbirth. She became a Mormon and with her 5 children and 30 year old sister joined a handcart company and traveled six months from Scotland to Salt Lake City, Utah after walking 1,300 miles pushing a handcart from Iowa City, Iowa.

Anthony Hoksins, You May Not Be Who You Think You Are:Or, how Y-DNA testing broke up that old family of “mine”

After 30 years of tracing many branches of the descendants of Thomas Hodgkinson /Hoskinson, English settler in America in 1700, Tony Hoskins decided it was time to join several distant Hoskins (on) cousins who had already tested their Y-DNA. To say his own results were unexpected and genealogically transformative is to put it mildly. Come hear him discuss how science trumped rock-solid genealogical documentation, as well as how to get back on your feet when science drags your genealogical rug out from under you.

March 17, 2012 General Membership Meeting

Dr. Stephen P. Morse, 1940 Census Census, Getting Ready for the 1940 Census: Searching without a Name Index.

When the 1940 census is released in April 2012, it will not have a name index. Such an index will not be available for perhaps up to six months after opening day. So finding people in the census will involve searching by location instead. The census is organized by Enumeration Districts (EDs), so the location needs to be converted to an ED before the census can be accessed. The One-Step website contains numerous tools for obtaining EDs. This talk will present the various tools and show circumstances in which each can be used. It will also demonstrate a tutorial quiz for determining the best tool to use in each specific situation.
